Title: Development has begun on new Windows client
Post by: ancer on November 11, 2007, 11:21:24 PM
This is just an announcement to let everyone know that I've finally managed to make enough time to begin coding on a new Windows based client for HCL.  Development is being done in C# and I actually have a working copy of Winapp still running so with a couple of packet captures I've already got all commands and responses mapped out and just need to incorporate into the program.   The login has been completed over the weekend and hopefully I can have an alpha release in a week or two.

I hope to include all features of the web-based monitor into the software.  I'll keep everyone updated on the forums about how the progress is coming.

Thanks,
Jerry

If you make it based on GTK+ or QT it will have (finally) portability between *nix, Windows and Mac from start.

Do it, please, and I can help debugging on Linux :)

I would love to code a cross platform client, but unfortunately my programming skills only extend, and are confined to, windows based enviroments. This isn't to say I will not look into it, because I'm still in the beginning stages of development and now would be the time to make a change like you mentioned.  Thanks for the input.

Actually, mono is somewhat cross platform compatible with C#...

GTK+ for Windows (http://gladewin32.sourceforge.net/) (more cross-compatible with GNOME), and some books (http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&index=books&field-keywords=GTK%2B&page=1) to ease the learning curve.
QT for Windows (http://trolltech.com/developer/downloads/qt/windows) (more cross-compatible with KDE, eventually), and some books (http://trolltech.com/developer/documentation/books) to ease the learning curve

Some of the books are a little dated but there are some very recent books too. And since you program in C++, there is hope. C and C# won't be such a daunting task too, I believe.

But on Linux/X Windows this is not important hence you could have GTK+ apps running on XFCE, KDE or even WindowMaker. The Desktop Manager is not really important.

But porting to other systems is easier from there.

Skype for Linux is made with QT and GIMP for Windows uses GTK+

How is the development going?  We are interested in this feature.  Any update on a release?

Thanks,
Chris

Sorry for the lack of updates and ghostly habits I've formed around the forum.  My business has just been taking everything out of me and all my time at that, therefore development is rather slow.  Once again I apologize, but I haven't given up.

One Question, Will it be free?

I've yet to come to a conclusion about licensing.  I apologize, but have just been focusing on development.  Rest assured I will post as soon as I decide on how I want to do it.

Thanks

Hey 123 Support,

Don't worry with it, a community member has already begin development on a winapp we'll have more control over.

Is this going to be done with portability in mind? A year, if not longer, back I contacted HCL (I know it's under new management now) about a Mac App and would be interested in getting involved.  I can test or if needs be learn to code pretty damn quick!

Just wanted to put my two cents in. . .
I do a lot of work on sites for starting businesses and also for non-profits.  I am happy to have things at low or no cost.  If think it should be free, but with some type of reminder or a PayPal Donate button in the client.  I am all about keeping it free, but I have the current WinApp but the PC with the 3 licenses I had died.  I don't want HCL to go through another disruptive event, due to lack of cash or interest due to lack of cash.
So maybe some type of medium ground can be found.

I am not sure if this has been asked but i cant say i found a conclusive answer to it.

Does this statement of yours still stand? Do you have a member that is coding a windows client?
If so how/when can we get access to this source and/or alpha testing of it.
Cause i were about to see what i couldnt do about getting a client coded.

Best regards.

This person stopped it seems..

But our v3 continues.. we'll beta test it in a few weeks it looks like..

Maybe we'll code ourselves a Winapp, time will tell.

Well let me know.
Me myself i havent learned enough of one language to code it.
BUT i have been managing projects for years and brought in someone good in each area to make a finishing product that tend to be very kickass after i modified the code :).
Also it takes me only a week or 2 to learn a coding language good enough if i felt like it.
No joke. i read a book. it get stuck and i learnt it.

And first prio would be portability to most OS's.

I guess a beta release of 3.0.0 is pretty much needed to code a decent client.
If you need place to dump some files such as a svn repo gimme a pm.
Cause the svn link i managed to dig up didnt give me the much needed fix i needed to have in seeing some of the 3.0.0 code :P.
